This one-day gathering will explore the journal al-Fath and its contents. al-Fath, published in Egypt from 1926 to 1948, is an essential source for the study of modernist Islamic thought, modern Egyptian history, Islamic political thought, British colonial history, and Ottoman history. The workshop will begin with a general overview of the work, and then participants will break into groups to explore a particular issue, news, or theme. Reading knowledge of Arabic is necessary for full participation in the workshop. Breakfast, lunch, and coffee will be served for participants.
