Description: F C 342, French Through Coding, was designed, under the Experiential Learning Initiative, to offer a gentle introduction to skills common in Natural Language Processing (NLP) with a focus on processing texts in French, and now, in other Romance languages. In most Python-based tutorials on NLP, there is little reflection on the nature of the language data. Strings are assumed to be English; lists are arrays of fruit or animal types; dictionaries collect hypothetical student names and ID numbers. Here, Dr. Bullock demonstrates an approach that reduces the effort of coding while increasing the attention paid to the data.
